History is the study of humans as revealed by the past. The study of history is an indispensable intellectual endeavor for students who desire to understand and appreciate the human condition in all its diversity, as well as the historical process that has shaped their personal lives. The Department of History offers a wide array of courses in the history of Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the United States designed to acquaint students with the complexities of today’s multicultural “global village” and to deepen their understanding of the events, opinions, ideas, and facts they will need to make informed political, social, and personal judgments throughout their lives.

The study of history provides an appropriate background for almost any career. The history degree is particularly useful in preparation for professional and graduate studies, such as law and religion. The non-professional historian can find a rewarding career in teaching, archival work, museums, journalism, government, administration, and other occupations that call for a strong liberal arts background.

MINOR: Students majoring in history are required to have a minor, preferably one that complements the major in regard to post-baccalaureate plans. History courses taken as part of the minor program cannot be double-counted as part of a history major, a second major, or another minor.

GPA REQUIREMENTS: History majors must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 in all history courses taken, with no grade less than a C in any history course. History majors must also have a GPA of at least 2.0 in their minor, unless the minor specifically requires a higher GPA.

TRANSFER STUDENTS: Any courses taken at schools in the Tennessee Board of Regents or University of Tennessee systems will transfer without a problem. Students from non-state schools or private institutions may find that some of their classes will transfer as either general electives to count toward graduation or upper-level history electives, if similar courses are not offered at ETSU. Transfer students must meet the specific requirements for the history major or minor. Regardless of the number of credits in history they transfer, they must take a minimum of two 3000-level course and three 4000-level courses for the major, or one 3000-level course and two 4000-level courses for the minor, at ETSU . Transfer students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in all history courses taken, with no grade lower than a C in any history course.
