  • BIOL 4337 - Plant Systematics

    (4 credits)
    Prerequisites: BIOL 3100 , or equivalent.

    Flowering plant classification and evolution. Characteristics and methods of traditional plant taxonomy and computer-based phylogenetic methods using morphological and molecular data sets. Plants will be studied in field and lab. Students will use data collected from plant specimens and from GenBank to conduct phylogenetic analysis in various angiosperm groups. Two hours of lecture and four hours of laboratory per week.

  • BIOL 4377 - Tropical Botany in Ecuador

    (3 credits)
    Prerequisites: BIOL 3100 , or equivalent and permission of the instructor.

    The class visits many field sites in Ecuador where students examine plants at diverse climatic, elevational and vegetational settings. Students identify plants, observe and dissect material, and become familiar with economically important tropical and temperate plants and plant communities. The course is conducted with a group of Ecuadorian botanists and students from our Ecuadorian sister university, Universidad Estatal de Bolívar.
