  • COUN 4207 - Girls’ and Women’s Wellness for Helping Professionals

    (3 credits)
    Explores biological, psychological, and social issues that disproportionately impact girls’ and women’s wellness; effective prevention/ interventions that are tailored to the unique needs of girls and women; and advocacy processes needed to address the institutional and social barriers that may impact girls’ and women’s access, equity, and success. This course is available to human services professionals, health care workers, counselors, social workers, teachers, gender studies majors, and other undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • CJCR 4017 - Comparative Criminal Justice

    (3 credits)
    Prerequisites: CJCR 1100  or permission of instructor or graduate status.

    Compares and contrasts the criminal justice system in the United States with the justice system in one selected country, with specific emphasis on historical elements, policing, courts, corrections, and government as it relates to crime. Additionally, the class also introduces crime as a global problem through analysis of transnational and international crime issues. This study abroad class is repeatable up to three times for credit.

    (3 credits)
    Prerequisites: CJCR 1100 , senior level standing, or permission of the instructor.

    Presents current issues in criminal justice policy and criminology research. The course deals with new research and policy implications in a wide range of areas depending upon the instructor teaching the course. Topics may include research methodological issues, police operations, correctional treatment programs, court and legal issues, issues and research in the area of forensic science, and criminological theory.

  • CDST 4017 - Ecofeminism: Nature, Gender, Culture

    (3 credits)
    Prerequisites: At least junior standing or permission of instructor.

    Presents a critical exploration of the Western concept of the relationship between human beings and the natural world in the context of ecofeminism–the proposition that the sociopolitical status of women is linked to the idea that Nature is a force to be conquered. Course topics include the nature/culture dichotomy; modernity, technology, and dominion over Nature; and ecofeminist responses to environmental degradation.

    Presents an interdisciplinary introduction to the theory and practice of the digital humanities. Course topics include defining the digital humanities; digital ways of knowing; the humanist in the digital world; interdisciplinary collaboration in the digital humanities; public intellectualism; and understanding how DH projects are made and the tools used to make them.

  • CUAI 3221 - IDEAS: Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies

    (3 credits)
    Prerequisites: Students must be admitted to Teacher Education.

    This course sets forth an integrated approach to curriculum in which social studies content, literature, and language arts skills are taught through five central themes. These central themes are I-Imagination, Discovery, E-Encounters, A-Adventures, and S-Synergy. Language arts skills-listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking-are integrated into social studies and literature experiences that are based on meaningful content and children’s experience. Students are invited to get involved in a variety of creative activities and learning situations that range from individual inquiry to group interactions.

  • CUAI 4416 - Residency I: Middle and Secondary School Curriculum, Instructional Methods, and Assessment

    (2 credits)
    Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education, CUAI 4571 .

    Corequisites: CUAI 4426 

    This course focuses on teaching and learning in middle and secondary schools and includes the study of national and state curriculum standards, research-based instructional methods, and standards-based assessment for a variety of subject areas and student needs. A concurrent field experience is required and a performance-based assessment plan is required as the major project.

  • CUAI 4467 - English as a Second Language (ESL) Curriculum Development (K-12)

    (2 credits)
    This course exposes K-12 practitioners to curricular strategies that have been field tested in K- 12 classrooms and found to support student learning. The strategies under investigation were developed by teachers and researchers working together to provide an education to children beginning to learn English. Strategies were selected on the basis of their usefulness in making rigorous core curriculum meaningful to students whose knowledge of English might otherwise hinder their academic progress.

  • CUAI 4547 - Emergent Literacy: PreK-4

    (3 credits)
    Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education.

    This course is designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students with a foundation for teaching reading and other literacy competencies to children in pre-k through grade 4. Emphasis is on developing and enlarging understanding of the reading process and the teaching of reading. Strategies and protocols for effective reading and writing instruction are presented.

    Prerequisites: Successful completion of CUAI 4241 CUAI 4310 SCED 4321 CUAI 4210 .

    Transitions candidates from Residency I into Residency II. It provides support for the following when planning multi-day lesson plans: planning for understanding, planning to support varied learning needs, using knowledge to inform teaching and learning, identifying and supporting language demands, planning assessments to monitor and support student learning, learning environment, engaging students in learning, deepening student learning, subject specific pedagogy, analysis of teaching effectiveness, analysis of student learning, and providing feedback to guide learning.

  • CUAI 4571 - Pre-Residency: Classroom and Instructional Management in Middle and Secondary Schools

    (1 credit)
    Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education.

    Classroom and instructional management in Middle and Secondary Schools. This supervised clinical/field experience focuses on establishing an effective, learning-centered classroom and practical applications of principles to specific routine and non-routine situations in middle and secondary school classrooms. Course requires 50 clock hours of field experience in middle or secondary classrooms prior to and during the start of the school year and must be taken in the summer prior to Residency I.
