IMED 3053 - Junior Internal Medicine Clerkship(16 credits) Required of all third-year medical students. With the Junior Internal Medicine Clerkship experience each student will spend a total of eight weeks* at two of our three affiliate hospital facilities: Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Johnson City Medical Center and Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, as part of the inpatient team. During this period students will admit and follow patients. Students will learn to take a complete history, conduct a thorough and accurate physical exam, take into consideration complex psycho-social issues, formulate a problem list, construct a relevant differential diagnosis, and along with the care team students will begin to manage the daily details of the care of patients.
Medical students will accompany the lead/senior resident to their continuity clinic one-half day per week for the entire clerkship. During this clinic time the student will see the patient with the resident and actively participate in the discussion with the resident and preceptor. The student will be required to write a complete history and physical or a SOAP note for each patient.
*The Junior Internal Medicine Clerkship will be a seven-week rotation in the 2018-2019 academic year only.
