CSKL 2350 - Doctoring II

(10 credits)

Required of all second-year medical students.
Doctoring II continues the process of transformation of the medical student into a physician begun in Doctoring I. This year long course emphasizes the integration, review, and application of basic science pathophysiology through an introduction to clinical medicine. This occurs within the context of cardinal manifestations of disease. Students use their knowledge base to build differential diagnoses and learn advanced interviewing and physical exam skills working with standardized patients. Developing critical thinking skills is an important function of the course. Additionally, students are introduced to evidence-based medicine and how to use available resources. Basic interpretation of electrocardiograms, lab data, and diagnostic imaging studies are also presented. Standardized patients, small group attending physician sessions, and simulation lab workshops are used to facilitate the course. Students will also apply their knowledge to clinical cases encountered during clinical preceptorships in physician offices. Students are expected to approach this course in a self-directed learning format with active participation. Cases used in the course emphasize themes related to society, ethics, and cultural competence. Students will continue the process of self-reflection as it relates to their future careers in medicine
