MDIN 1311 - Foundations of Medical Knowledge

Required of all first-year medical students.
The course presents the fundamental principles, core concepts, and vocabulary of the medical basic science disciplines in a cohesive manner. Students learn the relationships between anatomic and molecular structures and cellular and bodily processes and make the connections between basic science information and human health and disease. Students completing FMK will have a solid foundation of anatomic, cellular, and molecular principles in health and disease. FMK utilizes the Flipped classroom modality, specifically Team-Based Learning and Just-in-Time-Teaching teaching methodologies. Students acquire basic knowledge about each topic through short videos, web-based tutorials, and e-learning modules. These can be viewed as many times as necessary to master the content. Handouts accompany each video and tutorial and detail the specific information students should learn in form of specific and concrete, actionable learning objectives. The course faculty do not cover the material through traditional class lectures. Rather, class time is used to apply the basic science knowledge to clinical practice (paper cases or clinical vignettes) and to review and explain difficult concepts. Class includes individual or group problem-solving and interactive learning rather than passively listening to lectures.
