RPCT 3009 - Junior RPCT Primary Care Clerkship

(20 credits/10 weeks or 24 credits/12 weeks)

Required of all RPCT third-year medical students.
The RPCT Primary Care Clerkship is a 10 or 12 week clinical experience in a rural or underserved setting with the majority of the clerkship spent with primary care providers. One week will be the Junior Clinical Elective scheduled during the overall 10 or 12 week clerkship block. The objectives of the RPCT Primary Care Clerkship are a combination of the generalist Family Medicine and Underserved Medicine clerkships. One week of the RPCT Clerkship is devoted to a health fair which includes didactics, skills training, and ACLS. One week is devoted to a family medicine residency experience in either (Johnson City, Kingsport or Bristol). The student may request additional weeks in the Family Medicine residency if they plan on doing a Family Medicine residency.

During this clerkship, students will spend time rotating through different sites in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Most of this experience will require overnight stays Monday through Friday paid for by Rural and Community Programs. Additionally, students will be required to complete four SOAP notes, one resource assessment, a patient needs assessment, an ambulatory preventive medicine exercise, and a behavioral change/motivational interview.
