MDIN 1314 - Cardiovascular, Pulmonary and Renal

Required of all first-year medical students.
Cardiovascular, Pulmonary and Renal (CPR) gives students a fundamental knowledge of the function of the heart, lungs and kidneys and an understanding of the biological, diagnostic and therapeutic principles that produce optimal and well-informed patient care. Specifically, CPR presents physiology, anatomy, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and clinical sciences as they relate to the cardiovascular, pulmonary and renal organ systems and management of the diseases associated with these organs. The course progresses through sections beginning with basic concepts necessary for understanding the interrelationships of all three systems individually, and together in a concluding clinical overview session. The course utilizes the flipped classroom modality with Team-based learning and Just-in-time teaching methodologies with faculty from the basic sciences and primary care. Students acquire basic knowledge about each topic through short videos, web-based tutorials, and e-learning modules. Class time is utilized to apply basic science knowledge to clinical practice (paper cases or clinical vignettes) and to review and explore difficult concepts. Students engage in group problem-solving exercises and discussions that further develop thought processes that strengthen their ability to apply newly acquired knowledge in the practice of evidence-based medicine.
