MDIN 1310 - EQUAL Professional Immersion

(3 credits)
Required of all first-year medical students.
EQUAL (Experiencing Quillen, Underserved in Appalachia, and Learning communities) Professional Immersion introduces students to Quillen, the underserved patients and communities of Appalachia, and each student’s Learning Community. Quillen is full of people and resources to support students throughout their medical education journey-their “Quillen Family.” An introduction to Quillen is a major theme, learning about resources and one another to begin the first week and exploring the TRAILS curriculum in the second week. The unique learning environments, instructional methods, and typical schedule is introduced over these two weeks. Several themes are presented as “lenses” to carry with students through the TRAILS curriculum and into their patient encounters:  community health, patient inclusivity, patient advocacy, and patient safety. This course and these themes were all created by a working group of Quillen students who felt that an “immersion” in the Quillen Family, the Appalachian community, basic doctoring skills, the student’s own professional identity, and Quillen’s foundational curricular principles is the ideal way to begin medical education.
