MDIN 2312 - Endocrinology and Reproduction

Required of all second-year medical students.
The endocrine system comprises widely distributed organs that coordinate the activity of almost every cell and organ to maintain homeostasis throughout an individual’s lifespan. Growth and development, metabolism and body composition, fluid and electrolyte balance, heart rate and blood pressure, and even behavior are just a some of the activities responsive to the hormones synthesized and secreted by endocrine organs. This course considers endocrine function from the perspective of all major basic science disciplines: histology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, immunology, and microbiology. Endocrine pathophysiology typically results from the overproduction or underproduction of hormones. Careful integration of disease manifestations with a full understanding of endocrine function at the cell and molecular level leads to accurate diagnosis, treatment, and management of endocrine pathologies. Male and female reproductive function are essential endocrine functions and explored in special detail.
