The Department of Teaching and Learning offers programs that focus on the application of developmental learning and other psychological principles in a wide variety of settings including home, school, workplace, and community. Teaching programs leading to licensure are offered. Courses in teacher education and the behavioral sciences are provided both for majors and students in other academic areas.

Our Mission

The Mission of the Department of Teaching and Learning is to engage in research, apply scientifically-based knowledge to enhance the development and learning of diverse peoples across the lifespan, and create models of service in the communities we serve. 

Our Vision

We value high standards for teaching, learning, and inquiry through providing a well-rounded education for the professions of teaching and learning in an effort to enhance quality education in our region and beyond.

The Department is comprised of three programs: offering the following options within each program:

 

Early Childhood

  • PhD in Early Childhood Education

  • MA Early Childhood Education (with concentration in Initial Licensure PreK-3, Master Teacher, or Researcher

  • Bachelor of Science degree: Early Childhood Development (PreK-3 Licensure and Non-licensure degrees)

  • Early Childhood Education Emergent Inquiry Program (online master’s certificate program for individuals who have a bachelor or master’s degree in Early Childhood or a related field (e.g., Psychology, Special Education, Elementary Education, etc.)

  • Early Childhood Online Master’s Program

  • Minor in Early Childhood

 

Education Foundations

  • Minor in Education

  • Interdisciplinary Minor in Leadership Studies

  • Education Foundations courses are provided to support programs in the College of Education consistent with the college’s core requirements regarding knowledge, skills, and values deemed to be essential requisites for all of the college’s graduates.

 

Special Education

  • MEd in Special Education (Initial Licensure in Modified, Comprehensive, or Early Childhood Special Education, and Non-licensure Advanced Practitioner)

  • Bachelor of Science with Initial Licensure in Modified or Comprehensive Special Education

  • Minor in Special Education

Students failing to demonstrate ethical and/or professional behaviors, as required by either the appropriate professional associations and/or the National Educational Association, upon review and substantiation (with due process), may be denied continuance in departmental programs. If intervention is indicated and completed, the student may petition the department for readmission.

The Department of Teaching and Learning in the Clemmer College of Education offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Development. The licensure program (Pre-K-3) is designed to provide academic preparation in the growth and development of young children (0-8), their families, and environmental factors influencing their development. The non-licensure program prepares candidates to work in the field of early childhood education in settings not requiring a license (e.g., childcare, community settings/agencies.) In addition, the early childhood education program offers a minor in Early Childhood Education and opportunity for adding an early childhood endorsement to existing education licenses.

Graduate Study - The Early Childhood Program offers a graduate program leading to a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education with three concentrations: Initial Licensure PreK-3, Master Teacher, and Researcher. The master teacher concentration is offered both on-ground and online. A master’s certificate, Early Childhood Education Emergent Inquiry, is an online master’s certificate program for individuals who have a bachelor or master’s degree in Early Childhood or a related field (e.g. Psychology, Special Education, Elementary Education, etc.). In addition, a Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education is offered beyond the master’s degree. Further information on these programs may be obtained from the School of Graduate Studies.

 

Educational Foundations (EDFN)

The mission and purpose of the foundations program unit in the College of Education is to plan, coordinate, and deliver educational experiences consistent with the college’s core requirements regarding knowledge, skills, and values deemed to be essential requisites for all of the college’s graduates We believe that all of the college’s graduates should demonstrate:

Research competence (possess inquiry skills);

  • Technological literacy;

  • Effective communication skills;

  • Grounding in historical, social, psychological, philosophical, political, and legal foundations related to their area of preparation;

  • Multicultural competencies;

  • Leadership and followership skill, attitudes, and behaviors;

  • Commitment to lifelong learning and development.

The educational foundations unit plans, coordinates, and delivers courses and other educational experiences that provide:

  1. Teacher education courses foundational for preparation of teacher candidates in both undergraduate and graduate programs throughout the college.

  2. Courses for Curriculum and Instruction, Early Childhood, Special Education, Physical Education and Counseling programs, contributing to competencies and qualifications in research, human development, and service.

  3. Courses and an interdisciplinary minor in Leadership Studies.

 

The unit’s course listings support the professional growth and development of these competencies for undergraduate and graduate students across the college and university.

The Department of Teaching and Learning in the Clemmer College of Education offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education.

This licensure program is designed to provide academic preparation in Special Education leading to license in the state of Tennessee which enables candidates to teach special education students K-12. Candidates for the Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education enroll in undergraduate coursework that prepares the candidate for initial teaching licensure in EITHER K-12 Modified Special Education (high-incidence disabilities) [ 460] and K-12 Comprehensive Special Education (low-incidence disabilities) [ 461]. The student must select the licensure path by the second semester of their junior year. In addition, the special education program offers a minor in Special Education and opportunity for adding a Special Education endorsement to existing education licenses.

Graduate Study - The Special Education Program offers a graduate program leading to a master’s degree in Special Education (Initial Licensure in Modified, Comprehensive, or Early Childhood Special Education, and Non-licensure Advanced Practitioner).
