The Department of Communication and Performance offers programs in Communication Studies, Theatre and Dance, and Storytelling. Our department pursues the following objectives as we educate and train our students: to provide professional preparation for careers in communication and the performing arts; to provide leadership training and development; and to help students and graduates use communication and performance skills, talents, and knowledge to create more humane social worlds.
The Department of Communication and Performance offers a B.A. in Theatre and a B.A. and B.S. in Communication Studies. In addition, we offer minors in Theatre, Dance, Storytelling, and Communication Studies.
A minor is required for all students majoring in this department.
K-12 Teacher Licensure: Students seeking the B.A. in Theatre may also qualify for initial teacher licensure in Tennessee for grades K-12 by completing specific courses in the teaching field, the Secondary Education Minor, and CUAI 4580: Residency II (student teaching, 12 semester hours). As early as possible, students should contact the Student Services Office in the Clemmer College of Education for an advising appointment. Students may visit Room 321 Warf-Pickel Hall or call 423-439-7626 to schedule an appointment.
Graduate Study - The Department of Communication and Performance, in partnership with the Department of Mass Communication, also offers a master’s degree in Professional Communication. See the Graduate Catalog for further information.
