The Department of Mass Communication offers programs in Advertising/Public Relations, Journalism, and Radio/Television/Film (RTVF). Our department mission is to foster an environment of inquiry, creativity, and innovation to promote responsible and media-literate citizenship, and to teach students the tools for flourishing in the Mass Communication professions. Our department pursues the following objectives as we educate and train our students: to provide training in digital storytelling and content creation for multiple mass communication forms; focus on individually-tailored, interactive audiences and how to appeal to them; provide project-focused teamwork experiences that accurately represent what students will confront professionally.
The Department of Mass Communication prepares students for successful media careers; for example, filmmaker, multimedia journalist, public relations/advertising specialist, social media manager, sports media, or television/radio professional. Our programs of study are designed to provide professional preparation for students interested in creatively communicating with audiences thorough existing and emerging media. Our programs go beyond lecture-based experiences by giving students real-world opportunities to create. Our department’s application-based approach provides collaborative opportunities for learning through our community and professional partners.
