International Affairs Major Program Information

The International Affairs major is a study of the behavior of states, international organizations, and domestic political actors within the international community. The International Affairs curriculum is designed to provide a basis for analyzing international issues such as international cooperation and conflict, the global political economy, U.S. foreign policy, world cultures, global health and environmental concerns, and international law and organization. The International Affairs major provides excellent preparation for law school and/or graduate school, and majoring in International Affairs can lead to employment in many sectors of the economy. Potential positions of employment include policy analyst, social science teacher, foreign correspondent, consultant, legislative aide, intelligence officer, Foreign Service Officer, non-governmental organization researcher or manager, Peace Corps Officer, and United Nations staff member.
The total number of credits required for graduation in the International Affairs major is 120. A minor field of study, of 18-27 credit hours, is required. The International Affairs major requires the university-wide standard of a minimum of 2.0 GPA. Double counting of credits for the International Affairs major and for another major or minor is limited and must have the approval of the Coordinator of the International Affairs major or the Chair of the Political Science Department. Transfer students should note that the International Affairs major requires that at least 15 of the 33 credit hours required must be completed at East Tennessee State University.

Humanities and Fine Arts
9 credits, consisting of 3 credits of literature, 3 credits of fine arts, and 3 credits of humanities electives.
Mathematics
Students will enroll in the appropriate general education math course during their first calendar year of enrollment at ETSU. Students required to complete learning support in mathematics must enroll in a learning support-designated section (L01-L99) of MATH 1530 during their first 15 hours at ETSU (not including summer) unless they are also required to complete learning support in reading or writing. Students needing learning support in reading or writing in addition to learning support in math should enroll in MATH 1530-Lxx immediately upon completing their other learning support requirements.
