The Department of Engineering Technology, Surveying, & Digital Media, a unit of the College of Business and Technology [CBAT], is one of the largest and most academically diverse units of East Tennessee State University. The Department offers undergraduate degree programs in numerous concentrations, undergraduate minors in two areas, and graduate degree programs in three concentrations. Several programs are accredited through ABET. Additionally, there are many majors and/or programs that are available through the Academic Common Market allowing out-of-state students to enroll at ETSU at in-state tuition rates.

The department’s adminstrative and faculty offices are housed primarily in two buildings on the ETSU main campus. The Engineering Technology and Surveying & Mapping programs are located in Wilson-Wallis Hall while the Digital Media program is housed across State of Franklin Road from the main campus in the Scott M. Niswonger Digital Media Center.

Surveying and Mapping Science Major Program Information


The Surveying and Mapping curriculum has a core curriculum and guided electives.

This program is accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC) of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 – telephone: (410) 347-7700; www.abet.org.

It is designed to meet the following objectives and outcomes. Within two to four years, graduates of the program will:

  1. be prepared to successfully complete the NCEES Principles and Practices exam as evidenced by an overall pass rate that meets or exceeds the national average; 
  2. seek progressive experience and increased professional opportunities as evidenced by 70% of our responding graduates reporting employment in the surveying profession, a related profession, or enrollment in graduate school;
  3. be active in the state and national organizations that represent their profession as evidenced by 50% of our graduates joining such an organization within 2-4 years;
  4. strive for leadership roles in the local, state, and national organizations that represent their profession, as evidenced by 5% of our graduates holding office as a committee chair or officer, or serving on a university surveying advisory committee;
  5. contribute to the continuing success of the ETSU program and the profession, as evidenced by 25% of responding graduates contributing to the program or profession. 

Students at graduation will have:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and applied sciences;
  2. an ability to design experiments and conduct experiments as well as analyze data and interpret data;
  3. an ability to formulate or design a system, process, or program to meet desired needs;
  4. an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams;
  5. an ability to identify and solve applied science problems;
  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
  7. an ability to communicate effectively;
  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of solutions in a global and societal context;
  9. a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning;
  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues;
  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, modern scientific and technical tools necessary for professional practice;

and graduates shall also be:

  1. able to function
    • as a professional
    • as an effective member of a project team and
    • in a dynamic (changing) environment;
  1. technically competent and able to adapt to the work environment
    • “technically competent” means that the graduates have knowledge of and exposure to basic surveying field equipment and a general understanding of surveying laws

Students in Surveying and Mapping Science pursue coursework leading to professional land surveying practice. Core courses include plane, geodetic, and boundary surveying. By taking a core of 74 semester hours in surveying related courses, students are well-prepared for future licensing and professional-level positions with surveying and engineering firms, government service, utility companies, and related industries.

General Program Information


To earn a degree from ETSU, there are specific course requirements put forth by ETSU, by the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), by each college, and by each department. All students must meet the degree requirements at each of these levels. Please follow the format below:

University-level Degree and Graduation Requirements

TBR General Education Requirements: 42 Credit Hours

Students will enroll in the appropriate general education math course during their first calendar year of enrollment at ETSU. Students required to complete learning support in mathematics must enroll in a learning support-designated section (L01-L99) of MATH 1530  during their first 15 hours at ETSU (not including summer) unless they are also required to complete learning support in reading or writing. Students needing learning support in reading or writing in addition to learning support in math should enroll in MATH 1530-Lxx immediately upon completing their other learning support requirements. Additional Information


Transfer Students -

  1. Transfer students must meet all ETSU requirements for the minimum number of hours from ETSU and from a senior institution. Articulation agreements with several two-year institutions are available for smooth transfer to ETSU.

  2. Students who completed courses that met university approved general education requirements prior to declaring a major in this department may substitute them for the more limited menu of courses listed above.

  3. Students are encouraged to contact the program coordinator to discuss their individual needs.
