The Nursing Informatics Certificate Program provides a formal program of study for master’s-prepared nurses in nursing informatics. The Certificate Program provides an individualized experience through which students gain a strong foundation in healthcare informatics and prepares the nurse for the certification examination in healthcare informatics. The formal program of study is designed to meet the need for students who already have the Master of Science in Nursing degree without requiring them to complete a second master’s degree. Priority will be given to those applications received by the deadlines. Applications will continue to be received until the cohort is filled.

Fall:  Early Application Deadline-February 1; Final Deadline-April 1

Spring:  Early Application Deadline-July 1; Final Deadline-August 1

Summer:  Early Application Deadline-December 1; Final Deadline-February 1

Admission Requirements


Admission to the program will be based on competitive selection from the pool of applicants who meet the College of Graduate Studies admission requirements from the designated home school.

Additional admission requirements for the Nursing Informatics Certificate Program include:

  1. A masters degree in nursing from an accredited program (NLNAC or CCNE)

  2. Eligibility to practice as a Registered Nurse in Tennessee or the state in which clinical assignments are completed. 

  3. Overall MSN GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

  4. TOEFL score of at least 600 if native language is not English or equivalent other forms of TOEFT or other exams.

  5. A written document prepared by the applicant that includes a resume, a discussion of prior professional experience, future career goals, and reasons for pursuing the certificate program.

  6. Letters of recommendation from at least three persons (a minimum of one academic) familiar with the applicant’s academic and professional background and experience in nursing practice. 

Total Required for Program: 23 Credit Hours
