Africana Studies Program Description

The Africana Studies Program promotes the awareness and understanding of issues related to the history of Africa and the impact of Africa on United States and World history.  Drawing upon the broad resources of the University, the Program offers and coordinates a variety of co-curricular and extracurricular activities. It encourages regular course offerings on Africa, Black American Studies, American Studies, and Humanities in a number of academic departments.

A multidisciplinary faculty committee oversees the work of the Program.  An effort is made to consult with interested students to ensure that the Program’s activities and course offerings meet their needs and satisfy their academic interests.  Because of its flexibility, the Program serves as an attractive option for students in a wide variety of Majors.  In consultation with an Africana advisor, students may plan a course of study in the Africana Minor that will complement their Majors, enhance their employment skills, and enrich the knowledge gained in their studies at the University.
