The Computer Science concentration is designed for students who wish to apply their knowledge to the development of systems level software programs.  These applications include but not limited to: real-time graphics simulations, distributed systems, and operating systems.  It will also be an asset for those students who are planning for graduate work in computer science.  The CS concentration supplements the computing core curriculum with courses in data structures, algorithms, computer architecture, and operating systems.  The concentration also requires additional hours of mathematics and science, including the calculus sequence required of mathematics majors and one additional lab science.

Grade Requirement Policy

For satisfactory progression in the major or minor, the student must attain:

  1. An overall GPA of 2.5 or better; and
  2. A GPA of 2.5 or better in all computing courses; and
  3. A grade of B- or better in CSCI 1250  and CSCI 1260 .
  4. A grade of “C-” or better in all other major requirements. This includes both common core and concentration-specific courses and all courses from other departments that satisfy major requirements.
  5. A minimum grade of “C” in ENGL 1010  and ENGL 1020 .

All computing majors or minors may attempt CSCI courses a maximum of three times. An attempt is defined as registering for and remaining enrolled in a course after the third week of the semester. (Withdrawing from a course after the third week of the semester is considered an attempt.)

Computing majors and minors will be required to change their program of study if these requirements cannot be met.

All concentrations must complete 124 credits, including the ETSU General Education Requirements, the common computing core, and the concentration-specific courses.

CISC majors must pass the proficiency exam or complete CSCI 1100 - Using Information Technology  prior to accumulating 30 credits.

General Program Information

To earn a degree from ETSU, there are specific course requirements established by ETSU, by the East Tennessee State University Board of Trustees, by each college, and by each department. All students must meet the degree requirements at each of these levels outlined in the following list:

University-level Degree and Graduation Requirements

Total Credit Hours for Degree: 124

General Education Requirements: 41 Credit Hours

Listed below are the categories and courses specified under East Tennessee State University Board of Trustees General Education Requirements. Note that certain courses are required for this degree, specific to this major. Thus, these courses will satisfy both a General Education requirement AND a requirement of this major. (Other majors may require different General Education courses.) Where specific courses are required for this major, only those courses are listed under the category. If there are no specific major requirements for a category, all course options appear.

Communication

9 credits, consisting of 6 credits of written composition and 3 credits of oral communication.

Written Composition

Complete both of the following:

Oral Communication

Complete one of the following:

Humanities and Fine Arts

9 credits, consisting of 3 credits of literature, 3 credits of fine arts, and 3 credits of humanities electives.

History

6 credits, consisting of both of the following:

Natural Sciences

8 credits, consisting of two of the following in the same science sequence (discipline.) (Some require labs which are listed directly after the lecture.)

Mathematics

Students will enroll in the appropriate general education math course during their first calendar year of enrollment at ETSU. Students required to complete learning support in mathematics must enroll in a learning support-designated section (L01-L99) of MATH 1530  during their first 15 hours at ETSU (not including summer) unless they are also required to complete learning support in reading or writing. Students needing learning support in reading or writing in addition to learning support in math should enroll in MATH 1530-Lxx immediately upon completing their other learning support requirements. Additional information may be found on the University Advisement Center website www.etsu.edu/uac/learningsupport/

Computer Science Concentration: 36 Credit Hours

Major Electives - 9 credit hours

Three approved CSCI electives (at least one at the 3000-4000 level) for a total of 9 credit hours.

Free Electives: 5 Credit Hours

Minor: no minor required
