The Department of Sport, Exercise, Recreation, and Kinesiology offers two different baccalaureate degree programs: B.S. in Physical Education with concentrations in Exercise Science and K-12 Teacher Education as well as a B.S. in Sport and Leisure Management with concentrations in Sport Management and Park and Recreation Management.

The Exercise Science concentration is suggested for the student who is interested in a career in physical therapy, occupational therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, sports medicine, corporate fitness, and related fields. The K-12 teacher licensure concentration prepares students as professional physical educators in grades K-12.  The Sport Management concentration prepares students to work as leaders in the sport industry. The Park and Recreation Management concentration prepares students for leadership roles in the leisure service industry including community, commercial, and natural resource management settings.

The Department of Sport, Exercise, Recreation, and Kinesiology also offers minors in Park and Recreation, Sport Management, Coaching, and Physical Education.

Graduate Study - The Department of Sport, Exercise, Recreation, and Kinesiology offers Master of Science degrees in Sport Management as well as Sport Science and Coach Education and a Ph.D. in Sport Physiology and Performance. This program offers a very unique experience working directly with collegiate athletes and coaches.  Additional information is available in the Graduate Catalog.

Physical Education (K - 12) Concentration


The K-12 teaching concentration prepares students for teacher licensure in physical education in the state of Tennessee. When students satisfy the requirements for teacher licensure, they will be licensed to teach physical education in grades kindergarten through 12. The program of study provides extensive training in elementary and secondary pedagogy and supports the mission of the Clemmer College of Education—Educating Leaders in the 21st Century. Teacher candidates are trained to assume leadership roles in the classroom, school, and community, while developing skills and knowledge in professional content and pedagogy with a special emphasis on technology, multicultural, and inclusion education. Physical Education specialists develop skills in reflective thinking and decision-making as they grow personally into caring lifelong learners. Students must be admitted to Teacher Education prior to enrolling in PEXS 3850 PEXS 4007 PEXS 4060 PEXS 4717 , PEXS 4700 , EDFN 3301 , MEDA 3570 , and CUAI 4580 .

To earn a degree from ETSU, there are specific course requirements established by ETSU, by the East Tennessee State University Board of Trustees, by each college, and by each department. All students must meet the degree requirements at each of these levels outlined in the following list:

  • Note:

    Students will enroll in the appropriate general education math course during their first calendar year of enrollment at ETSU. Students required to complete learning support in mathematics must enroll in a learning support-designated section (L01-L99) of MATH 1530  during their first 15 hours at ETSU (not including summer) unless they are also required to complete learning support in reading or writing. Students needing learning support in reading or writing in addition to learning support in math should enroll in MATH 1530-Lxx immediately upon completing their other learning support requirements. Additional information may be found on the University Advisement Center website www.etsu.edu/uac/learningsupport/
