Sociology is the study of people interacting with others individually, in social groups, and in social systems. The discipline is extremely diverse, including areas such as: community, religion, theory, collective behavior, environment, health, demography and aging, and much more. Students who major in Sociology will have the technical and analytic skills and the global perspective needed to succeed in a variety of careers, such as: social services/public services; program support; management; education; marketing research; social science researcher.
Sociology offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree. The primary difference between the two is the BA requires both a foreign language and non US History component, while the BS requires a more logic-oriented component (see BS requirements). In addition, for the BS in Sociology, students must also take Data Analysis (SOCI 3444).
A student majoring in sociology must complete 30 credit hours of approved courses. In addition to maintaining an overall grade point average of at least 2.0 in the major, a student must earn a grade of C or above in each required course in the major. This major requires a minor.
This major requires a Major Field Test prior to graduation. The exam is coordinated and administered by Sociology faculty usually during a student’s final semester.
Advising
Students with 0-59 earned credit hours:
Contact the Center for Advisement and Student Excellence (CASE) to schedule an appointment with your advisor. Visit the CASE website (http://www.etsu.edu/cas/case/) or call (423) 439-5602.
Transfer Students
Transfer students majoring in sociology should contact the chair of the department for advising as soon as possible. This will ensure that the student’s previous work will be coordinated efficiently with ETSU requirements.
Transfer students must meet the specific requirements for the sociology major. There is no predetermined maximum number of credit hours that a transfer student may apply to the sociology or anthropology curriculums. The final decision will be made by the department chair.
For general information about the department or courses, contact Dr. William Duncan, Chair [duncanwn@etsu.edu; (423) 439-4996].
General Education Requirements: 41 Credit Hours
Listed below are the categories and courses specified under East Tennessee State University Board of Trustees General Education Requirements. Note that certain courses are required for this degree, specific to this major. Thus, these courses will satisfy both a General Education requirement AND a requirement of this major. (Other majors may require different General Education courses.) Where specific courses are required for this major, only those courses are listed under the category. If there are no specific major requirements for a category, all course options appear.
Graduation Requirements
Graduation in this major/concentration requires a minimum of 120 credits, including General Education requirements, CSCI 1100 , college degree requirements, major requirements, and minor requirements.
Passing the CSCI 1100 proficiency test produces no credit, but satisfies the graduation requirement (see http://www.etsu.edu/cbat/computing/uit/). If the total credits from these areas are less than 120 credits, students may use free electives to complete the requirement.
