The Statistics minor is intended for students interested in gaining a broad understanding of statistics, making them more competitive for employment and graduate study in natural and social sciences. This program will strengthen their understanding of statistical concepts and improve research skills.

The objective of the program is to provide a solid foundation in statistics education and training and is designed to enhance the student’s preparation in their own field of study. Specifically, the students are expected to develop the abilities, knowledge and/or skills with

  1. A clear comprehension of the theoretical basis of statistical inference and reasoning.

  2. A knowledge of statistical methods commonly used in practice, such as regression, the analysis of variance, the design of experiments, the design of statistical surveys, etc.

  3. A competency in using statistical computing packages such as SAS, R, SPSS.

  4. An ability to apply statistical knowledge in practice; ability to design surveys and experiments, to collect, process, and analyze data, and to summarize, interpret, and present the results in both oral and written form.

Statistics Minor Requirements: 23-27 credits

A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 18 credits of which at least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.

Notes:

  • * It is recommended that students take the special section of MATH 1530 which uses the textbook Seier & Joplin (2011), Introduction to Statistics in a Biological Context.

  • Courses required for the mathematics major cannot count toward a minor in statistics. In addition, students in the mathematical statistics track cannot minor in statistics.

  • Check with an advisor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to see if other statistics courses can be used as substitutions.
