The Film Studies Minor seeks to educate students about film in an interdisciplinary context. The goals of this program are to encourage serious consideration of film as an art form; to explore film as a medium of communication; and to examine the power of film in shaping attitudes, values, and our understanding of society and the world.

Courses are designed to provide students with knowledge of the techniques of the filmmaking process, the historical development of film as an institution, film theory, methods of critical analysis, and the relationship of film to broader issues within various disciplines.

The Film Studies Minor requires 21 credits of coursework. A 9 credit core is required of all minors. Students may select 12 credits of elective courses to complete the minor course of study.

Film Studies Minor: 21 credits

A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 18 credits of which at least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.

Required Core: 9 credits

• ENGL 3290 - Introduction to Film (3 credits)
• ENGL 3350 - Film History (3 credits)
• ENGL 4320 - Film Criticism (3 credits)

Advisor Approved Electives: 12 credits

Choose 12 credits from the following:

• ENGL 4290 - Film Genres (3 credits)
• ENGL 4340 - Topics in Film (3 credits)
• ENGL 4350 - National Cinemas (3 credits)
• ENGL 4360 - Screenwriting (3 credits)
• ENGL 4507 - Literature and Film (3 credits)
• RTVF 2602 - Video-Film Techniques (3 credits)
• RTVF 4957 - Topics in Radio-TV-Film (3 credits) (only when topic is film related - requires pre-approval from Film Studies coordinator)
• HIST 4957 - Topics in History (1-6 credits) (only when topic is film related - requires pre-approval from Film Studies coordinator)
• SOCI 4252 - Race, Class, and Gender in Film (3 credits)
• SOCI 4957 - Special Topics in Sociology (1-6 credits) (only when topic is film related - requires pre-approval from Film Studies coordinator)

Additional Information

With approval of the Film Studies Committee, additional special topics courses may be counted in the minor; however, no courses counting toward the student’s major may be counted toward satisfying the minor’s requirements.
