The purpose of the Student Personnel Leadership concentration is to respond to the ever-increasing need for providing new leaders and improving skills of existing leadership in entry to mid-level staff in two- and four-year institutions of higher education. Students will increase their knowledge of leadership principles and how they apply to the various areas of the institution and to working with students and other members of the university community.

Most students will matriculate through the program taking six (6) credits each term, although students who have graduate assistantships (G.A.s) will usually take nine (9) credits. 

Program Admission Requirements


  1. Individuals applying to the Student Personnel Leadership concentration must meet the general requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies, transfer of credit, and time limitations specified in the front section of this catalog. In addition, applicants must meet the specific requirements for admission to the department identified in this catalog.
  2. Applicants for admission to programs leading to a master’s degree must show a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or an upper level GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. GPAs in major field of study, calculated individually, must also be above 2.75. All exceptions to the 2.75 GPA for admissions must be approved on appeal.
  3. Applicants are encouraged to begin matriculation in the fall semester, however, applications are accepted for each term. The application deadlines are:

Applicants must submit:

  1. a completed ETSU application including three (3) letters of recommendation,
  2. a current resume, and
  3. all prior college transcripts.

Applicants will also be asked to participate in a personal interview.

Matriculation Limits


The time limit for the master’s degree is six (6) years.
