The purpose of the minor in China Studies is to provide students with a multidisciplinary approach to acquiring knowledge of China. The objectives to achieve this goal are to provide students a multidisciplinary understanding of Chinese culture, art, politics, history, economics, and language; engage students in critical thinking about Chinese choices of economic development, political strategies, and social aspirations; to enhance understanding of the diversity of life-ethnically, politically, historically, socially, and economically in China and expose students to China’s vision of itself and the pursuit of its place internationally through the impact of its history on the contemporary world and through needs of international cooperation in the global economy.

At the conclusion of the minor, the student will be expected to analyze in a multidisciplinary fashion Chinese culture, politics, history, economics, and language; to judge critically Chinese options in economic development, political strategies, and social goals; navigate through the diversity of the Chinese experience to interpret its ethnic, political, historical, social, and economic problems; and to evaluate China’s changing visions of itself historically, its place in the global economy, and its role in the contemporary world order.
