Synthetic biology is a broad leading-edge science that combines elements of genetic engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology, engineering, computer science, and mathematics. The use of living organisms to generate products from medicines to advanced materials is at the heart of the large and growing bioeconomy. This minor provides a curriculum focused on the latest information and techniques used in the science and industry. The course of study is designed to enhance science majors’ prospects for graduate school and jobs in biotech industries. It will also provide students from non-science majors (e.g. business, engineering, computer science, etc.) with a strong working knowledge of the field.

Minor Requirement

A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 18 credits of which at least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.

Synthetic Biology Minor Requirements: 21-22 credits
