American Sign Language Minor

American Sign Language Minor Program Information

The minor in American Sign Language (ASL) is appropriate for students wishing training in ASL for future communication with individuals in the Deaf community. The minor consists of a minimum of 18 credits of study. Students are encouraged to consult with a departmental advisor and review course descriptions prior to selecting and registering for class.

American Sign Language Minor Pre-requirements

Based on placement test or equivalent.

• ASLS 1010 - Beginning American Sign Language I (3 credits)
• ASLS 1020 - Beginning American Sign Language II (3 credits)

American Sign Language Minor Requirements: 18 credits

Required Courses: 6 credits

• ASLS 2010 - Second-Year American Sign Language I (3 credits)
• ASLS 2020 - Second-Year American Sign Language II (3 credits)

Advisor Approved Electives: 12 credits

• ASLS 3010 - Introduction to Deaf Culture (3 credits)
• ASLS 3020 - Linguistic Perspectives on ASL (3 credits)
• ASLS 3030 - American Sign Language: Fingerspelling and Numbers (3 credits)
• ASLS 3040 - Third-Year American Sign Language (3 credits)

Minor Information

A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 15 credits, of which at least 6 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.
