In simplest terms, chemistry is the science of matter. Anything that can be touched, tasted, smelled, seen or felt is made of chemicals.
Chemists are the people who transform the everyday materials around us into amazing things. Some chemists work on cures for cancer while others monitor the ozone protecting us from the sun. Still others discover new materials to make our homes warmer in the winter, or new textiles to be used in the latest fashions. The knowledge gained through the study of chemistry opens many career pathways. Here are just a few of the careers chosen by chemists.
There are a multitude of careers available to chemists which range from positions in industry, academics, government and medical careers, to give a brief list. portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/content.

There are a variety of Chemistry Programs to choose from at ETSU. These programs include: the ACS Chemistry Concentration, the ACS Biochemistry Concentration, the ACS Chemical Physics Concentration, the Chemistry Concentration, and the Chemistry minor.

Chemistry Major with ACS Chemical Physics Concentration

(Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics and Astronomy)
ACS Chemical Physics Concentration–This is a collaborative program with the Department of Physics and Astronomy and provides students with a strong emphasis in the physical and mathematical aspects of chemistry. It is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in such fields as computational chemistry, materials science, or the many areas of nanotechnology. The Chemistry Department’s ACS Chemical Physics concentration is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and as such it is subject to change upon notice from the ACS.

This program requires 120 credit hours. A minor is not required with this concentration. An overall 2.0 GPA is required for all major courses. For more information, please visit the Chemistry Department’s website (www.etsu.edu/cas/chemistry) or contact the department at 423-439-4367. To schedule an appointment with your advisor please refer to “How to Contact Your Advisor”  (www.etsu.edu/advisement/continuingstudents/default.aspx#Find).

Teaching Program Information

Teacher Education–Students interested in pursuing a teacher education program for certification as a teacher are asked to see the area advisor in the Department of Chemistry AND the professional advisor in the Office of Student Services, 321 Warf-Pickel, College of Education. Please refer to the section on “Admission to Teacher Education” for basic admission requirements in the College of Education section of this catalog.

Pre-Teacher Education–Declaration of Intent-All ETSU students desiring to complete a teacher education or other public school licensure program (for initial licensure, add-on endorsement, or advanced study in education) must file a Declaration of Intent in the Office of Student Services, 321 Warf-Pickel Hall. The Declaration of Intent should be filed before 30 credit hours of coursework have been completed or, in the case of transfer and post-baccalaureate students, in the first semester at ETSU. Delay or failure to file the Declaration of Intent may result in incomplete advisement. Students who have not filed the Declaration of Intent will not be considered for admission to teacher education and may be ineligible to enroll in many professional education courses.

Professional Education Requirements for Secondary and K-12 Students–The professional education requirements for secondary and K- 12 students are met by completing the minor in education (refer to the Education Minor  section in this catalog for a list of required courses) and the professional semester (CUAI 4580 , “Student Teaching”). Students are required to submit a professional portfolio for admission to teacher education.
