The Department of Engineering Technology, Surveying, & Digital Media, a unit of the College of Business and Technology [CBAT], is one of the largest and most academically diverse units of East Tennessee State University. The Department offers undergraduate degree programs in numerous concentrations, undergraduate minors in two areas, and graduate degree programs in three concentrations. Several programs are accredited through ABET. Additionally, there are many majors and/or programs that are available through the Academic Common Market allowing out-of-state students to enroll at ETSU at in-state tuition rates.

The department’s adminstrative and faculty offices are housed primarily in two buildings on the ETSU main campus. The Engineering Technology and Surveying & Mapping programs are located in Wilson-Wallis Hall while the Digital Media program is housed across State of Franklin Road from the main campus in the Scott M. Niswonger Digital Media Center.

Electronics Engineering Technology Concentration

This program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 – telephone: (410) 347-7700. This concentration emphasizes electronics specialties in the areas of Telecommunications and Instrumentation and Automation. It prepares individuals for job opportunities in all areas of electronics with selection of the general specialty.

General Program Information

To earn a degree from ETSU, there are specific course requirements put forth by ETSU, by the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), by each college, and by each department. All students must meet the degree requirements at each of these levels. Please follow the format below:

Communication

9 credits, consisting of 6 credits of written composition and 3 credits of oral communication.

Written Composition

Complete both of the following: 

• ENGL 1010 - Critical Reading and Expository Writing (3 credits)
• ENGL 1020 - Critical Thinking and Argumentation (3 credits)

• Students required to complete learning support in writing must enroll in both ENGL 1011  and in ENGL 1010 . Additional information may be found on the University Advisement Center website www.etsu.edu/uac/learningsupport. Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 1010  and ENGL 1020 .

Oral Communication

Complete one of the following:

• SPCH 1300 - Introduction to Communication Studies (3 credits)
• SPCH 2300 - Public Speaking (3 credits)
• SPCH 2320 - Argumentation and Debate (3 credits)

• When one of the oral communication courses listed above is completed to meet the general education core requirement, that course will not count toward ETSU’s oral communication-intensive requirement. (See “Other Graduation Requirements.”) Any additional course from this list that is completed will count toward the oral communication-intensive requirement.

9 credits, consisting of 3 credits of literature, 3 credits of fine arts, and 3 credits of humanities electives.

To Students Transferring into the Electronics Engineering Technology Program at ETSU

All students, including transfer students, must complete the published curriculum in electronics engineering technology in effect the year of their entry into the program. All students transferring into the B.S. degree electronic engineering technology program must take a minimum of four electronics courses that must include ENTC 3310 —Circuit Analysis. No associate degree coursework will be accepted for electronic coursework at the 4XXX level.

If the transfer student is from a program that is not accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the required minimum must also include ENTC 3320 —Electronics II. It is the students’ responsibility to provide evidence that the transferred coursework was completed at an ABET-accredited institution. (This information would usually be found in the school’s catalog.)
