The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program offers a major in Geology. Geology is the study of the Earth, its materials, processes, and development through time. The science of geology involves the application of knowledge about the Earth’s physical system to modern problems of mineral resources, fuels and energy, engineering, physical hazards, and the environment (both past and present). A B.S. in Geology will provide multiple potential directions for the graduate to pursue including entry-level jobs with local and regional mining companies. With classes in both GIS and geology, graduates can attain entry-level jobs in many county, state, and federal level departments where urban planning and natural resource management issues are constant. A B.S. in geology also provides the graduate to be a well-informed citizen about the real concerns dealing with natural hazards such as flooding, rock falls, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
The B.S. in Geology has a 120 credit hour requirement. A minor is required and the credit hour requirement ranges from 18 to 22. The department strongly suggests that Geology majors utilize a GIS minor-but this is not required. A minimum of a 2.0 GPA in the major is required. Double counting of courses for the major and minor are at the discretion of the major advisor. The department will accept 30 transferred credit hours.
