  • PEXS 3005 - Instructional Delivery Techniques for Movement

    (3 credits)
    The purpose of this course is to assist prospective teachers and movement instructors in acquiring the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to promote learning. Opportunities will be provided for students to learn and practice the essential skills of effective instruction and delivery. Instruction will be provided to assist students in developing the skills of reflective thinking, problem solving, and working with individuals with different cultural perspectives.

  • PEXS 4007 - Residency I: Elementary Physical Education Methods

    (3 credits)
    Provides instruction and experiences in program content, teaching methods, and learning styles for developmentally appropriate physical education programs for children ages 5 to 9. Emphasis will be placed on movement education, rhythm, body management, fundamental motor skills, and fitness/wellness appropriate to the kindergarten through fifth grade child. Experiences will include working with students within a public elementary school setting during class time. Admission to Teacher Education is required.

  • PEXS 4850 - Residency II in Physical Education

    (9 credits)
    Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education is required and all content courses must be completed. Corequisites: PEXS 4851   Provides Physical Education teacher candidates with experience in observing and teaching Physical Education and Lifetime Wellness in the public schools. It includes fifteen weeks split between an elementary placement and a secondary placement. The course is taken along with the required three-credit hour co-requisite, PEXS 4851 Residency II Seminar. Admission to Teacher Education is required and all content courses must be completed.

  • PHED 2316 - Self Defense for Women

    (1 credit)
    This course is an introduction to basic self-defense skills, escape and avoidance strategies, offensive and defensive postures, defensive techniques and simulated attacks. The course includes an exploration of violence prevention and victim abuse community services. The course addresses basic fitness principles, including strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Fitness principles are addressed specifically in terms of the student’s ability to practice and perform self-defense skills. This course is repeatable for credit.

  • PHED 2441 - Advanced SCUBA Diving

    (1 credit)
    Prerequisites: Completion of PHED 2440  or equivalent certification and permission of instructor. This course is designed to provide the Open Water Diver with advanced SCUBA skills obtained through additional classroom presentations beyond the basic level and at least five (5) open water SCUBA dives. The Advanced Open Water candidate will develop a more in-depth understanding of equipment, techniques, and safety factors associated with safely enjoying an advanced level of sport SCUBA diving.

  • PHED 2507 - Kayaking

    (1 credit)
    This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to participate in and enjoy kayaking as a recreational lifetime activity. Special emphasis will be given to the development of sound fundamental knowledge and skills such as paddling and steering techniques; rolling; fitting, care and use of equipment; personal safety skills; and reading moving water. Due to the nature of this course, all students will be required to make class field trips to paddling sites in the surrounding area. This course will be offered in conjunction with the Center for Physical Activity and will involve additional cost to cover the use of equipment and travel to paddling sites in the area.
