APPE 6524 - Rural Primary Care

(4 credits)

Prerequisites/Corequisites: APPE 6104 and enrollment in 4th professional year (P4).

Exposes student to providing patient-centered care for patients receiving care in a rural or underserved clinic, physician office, or other primary care setting. Student will gain experience in communication and assessment skills, physical assessment, chronic disease management and preventive care, and therapy modifications for special patient groups. Other skills developed include patient education and counseling, interprofessional communication and practice, medication acquisition, healthcare disparity and social determinants of health considerations, evidence-based practice, and designing and implementing safe, efficacious, and cost-effective drug therapy to the patient. A unique opportunity to advance and apply skills gained in a general Ambulatory Care rotation in a rural environment. Benefits from learner flexibility and may include additional travel into the rural community, initiation of projects related to public health topics, healthcare disparities, or other community-guided needs, and/or other activities beneficial to patient care in the community.
