GEOS 2000 - Earth Materials(4 credits) Prerequisites: (GEOS 1040 and GEOS 1041 ) or permission of the instructor.
Studies common-rock forming minerals through their physical properties, chemical composition, crystal structure and morphology. Students learn to determine the optical properties using microscopes and use this to document the common rock-forming minerals in thin section. This minerology course includes identification of the common associations in geologic environments.Three lecture, two laboratory sessions per week.
Honors students will select and research four different mineral groups through the course of the semester.
