SOWK 5300 - Seminar in Substance Use and Addiction

(3 credits)
Provides a basic understanding of substance use and addiction including the various classifications of drugs, substance use disorder (SUD) and addiction symptomatology, and etiology of SUDs. The impact of substance use and addiction on vulnerable populations are examined along with various treatment models and preventive efforts. General systems theory and the biopsychosocial-spiritual perspective provide the frameworks for examining substance use and addiction at micro, mezzo, and macro levels of social work practice. Attention is also given to regulations controlling the use of drugs in society.
