HIST 5035 - The Founding Generation and Religion in the Constitutional Republic(3 credits) Explores the importance of religion in Colonial America, the American Revolution, and the founders’ religious practices and provides insights into scholarly and legal debates surrounding religious clauses in the Constitution throughout American history. Topics may include the Constitution, origins and evolution of the phrase “wall of separation between church and state,” disestablishment, education, and religion in the public sphere. The course links the founding era to today’s political and legal debates over religion.
