Human Development and Learning offers programs that focus on the application of development, learning, and other psychological principles in a wide variety of settings including home, school, and community. Courses in the behavioral sciences are provided both for majors and students in other academic areas. Areas of emphasis include developmental, educational and applied psychology, psychological assessment, human services, counseling, early child development, and special education.

The Department of Human Development and Learning offers three undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree: early childhood development, human services, and special education. In addition, minors in early childhood, special education, human development and learning, family studies, education, and leadership studies are available through our department.The department offers individuals holding professional teaching certification an opportunity to add an endorsement in special education and early childhood. Also offered are programs leading to the master of arts degree in early childhood, school counseling, marriage and family therapy, community agency counseling, special education, early childhood special education, and a Ph.D. in early childhood.

Students failing to demonstrate ethical and/or professional behaviors, as required by either the appropriate professional associations and/or the National Educational Association, upon review and substantiation (with due process), may be denied continuance in departmental programs. If intervention is indicated and completed, the student may petition the department for readmission.

The Department of Human Development and Learning in the Clemmer College of Education offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood development. The licensure program (Pre-K) is designed to provide academic preparation in the growth and development of young children (0-8), their families, and environmental factors influencing their development. The non-licensure program prepares candidates to work in the field of early childhood education in settings not requiring a license (e.g., childcare, community settings/agencies.) In addition, the early childhood education program offers a minor in early childhood education and opportunity for adding an early childhood endorsement to existing education licenses.

Graduate Study – The Early Childhood Program offers a graduate program leading to a master’s degree in early childhood education. In addition, a Ph.D. in early childhood education is offered beyond the master’s degree. Further information on this program may be obtained from the School of Graduate Studies.

The mission and purpose of the foundations program unit in the College of Education is to plan, coordinate, and deliver educational experiences consistent with the college’s core requirements regarding knowledge, skills, and values deemed to be essential requisites for all of the college’s graduates We believe that all of the college’s graduates should demonstrate:

Research competence (possess inquiry skills);
Technological literacy;
Effective communication skills;
Grounding in historical, social, psychological, philosophical, political, and legal foundations related to their area of preparation;
Multicultural competencies;
leadership and followership skill, attitudes, and behaviors;
Commitment to lifelong learning and development.

The educational foundations unit plans, coordinates, and delivers courses and other educational experiences that provide:

Teacher education courses foundational for preparation of teacher candidates in both undergraduate and graduate programs throughout the college.
Courses for Curriculum and Instruction, Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counseling programs, contributing to competencies and qualifications in research, human development, and service
Courses and an interdisciplinary minor in Leadership Studies.

The unit’s course listings support the professional growth and development of these competencies for undergraduate and graduate students across the college and university.

The Human Services program bases its mission in service to the academic, professional, and educational communities of the region and nation. The activities of this program are multiple, offering a baccalaureate in Human Services as well as minors in Human Development and Learning and Family Studies. The program is designed to provide a human and behavioral science background for persons interested in entering professions such as counseling, case management, teaching, program administration, and similar endeavors. Human service practitioners work in a variety of settings for a broad range of organizations dedicated to helping others transition through their developmental issues and processes. To the university, the program supports General Education requirements with SRVL 1020 , HDAL 2310 , and HDAL 2340 .
