The Department of Engineering Technology, Surveying, & Digital Media, a unit of the College of Business and Technology [CBAT], is one of the largest and most academically diverse units of East Tennessee State University. The Department offers undergraduate degree programs in numerous concentrations, undergraduate minors in two areas, and graduate degree programs in three concentrations. Several programs are accredited through ABET. Additionally, there are many majors and/or programs that are available through the Academic Common Market allowing out-of-state students to enroll at ETSU at in-state tuition rates.

The department’s administrative and faculty offices are housed primarily in two buildings on the ETSU main campus. The Engineering Technology and Surveying & Mapping programs are located in Wilson-Wallis Hall while the Digital Media program is housed across State of Franklin Road from the main campus in the Scott M. Niswonger Digital Media Center.

Product Development Concentration


The Product Development concentration is a multidisciplinary, manufacturing-based curriculum designed to educate and prepare students to be multifunctional, creative, and knowledgeable leaders and team members of product design teams. Graduates are able to apply their knowledge and understanding of the product development processes and new product realization.

General Program Information


To earn a degree from ETSU, there are specific course requirements established by ETSU, by the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), by each college, and by each department. All students must meet the degree requirements at each of these levels outlined in the following list:

University-level Degree and Graduation Requirements


Total Credit Hours for Degree: 128


TBR General Education Requirements: 41 Credit Hours


Listed below are the categories and courses specified under TBR General Education Requirements. Note that certain courses are required for this degree, specific to this major. Thus, these courses will satisfy both a TBR General Education requirement AND a requirement of this major. (Other majors may require different General Education courses.) Where specific courses are required for this major,  only those courses are listed under the category. If there are no specific major requirements for a category, all course options appear.

Communication


9 credits, consisting of 6 credits of written composition and 3 credits of oral communication.

Students will enroll in the appropriate general education math course during their first calendar year of enrollment at ETSU. Students required to complete learning support in mathematics must enroll in a learning support-designated section (L01-L99) of MATH 1530  during their first 15 hours at ETSU (not including summer) unless they are also required to complete learning support in reading or writing. Students needing learning support in reading or writing in addition to learning support in math should enroll in MATH 1530-Lxx immediately upon completing their other learning support requirements. Product Development Core Requirements: 20 Credit Hours

1 For details regarding specific block requirements and course selection, see General Education Requirements .

2 MATH 1840 , MATH 1850 , MATH 1910 , or MATH 1920  may satisfy the General Education Math requirement.

3 Cooperative Education (ENTC 4989 /ENTC 4999 ) may be substituted for ENTC 4600  and/or ENTC 3600 .

4 MATH 1910  MATH 1920  will satisfy the MATH 1840 /MATH 1850  and MATH 1720  sequence.

5 CHEM 1120 /CHEM 1121  or HSCI 2010 /HSCI 2011  may be substituted for PHYS 2020 /PHYS 2021 

6 In special cases and only with the approval of a PDEV program advisor, a student may develop an individualized sequence of specialty Engineering Technology and Technical Support courses selected with the goal of developing proven technical understanding and competence in one or two product development areas.

7 INTD 1115  may be substituted for ENTC 2160  for students taking INTD 2110 .

Transferring Policy


All non-technology coursework such as English, mathematics, and science is evaluated for transfer by an analyst in the Office of Admissions. All technology coursework submitted for transfer will be analyzed by the department chair or the appropriate program coordinator. The following criteria apply:

  1. Coursework must have been taken at a regionally accredited two- or four-year institution.
  2. Coursework must be equivalent to an ETSU course; if not, it will count as elective credit.
  3. Only coursework for which a grade of C or higher was earned will be accepted for transfer credit for courses in English, mathematics, science, and technology.
  4. No associate degree coursework will be accepted for Engineering Technology coursework at the 4xxx level.

Upon admission, the transfer student may consult the corresponding academic advisor for an agreement listing the coursework that must be successfully completed by the student.

Students contemplating the transfer of their technology-based associate degree should read the policy statement regarding transfer student admissions elsewhere in this catalog and confer with the corresponding academic advisor with the Department of Engineering Technology, Surveying, and Digital Media.
