The Nursing Education concentration offers a Post-Master’s certificate for nurses who have completed a Master of Science in Nursing degree. This customized special studies concentration provides education and training in the nurse educator role.

Application deadlines are as follows:

Beginning with admissions for the Summer 2018 term, the following application deadlines (dates for all materials to be received by the School of Graduate Studies) are:

Fall Admission                   May 1

Spring Admission              September 15

Summer Admission           February 1

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program will be based on competitive selection from the pool of applicants who meet the College of Graduate Studies admission requirements from the designated home school.

Additional admission requirements for the Nursing Education Certificate Program include:

1. A masters degree in nursing from an accredited program (NLNAC or CCNE)

2. Satisfactory completion of the following courses at the master’s level:

               Advanced Pathophysiology                             3 semester hours       
               Advanced Pharmacology                                 3 semester hours       
               Advanced Health Assessment                        3 semester hours        
               Advanced Health Assessment-Clinical           1 semester hour

3. Eligibility to practice as a Registered Nurse in Tennessee or the state in which clinical assignments are completed.

4. Overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

5. TOEFL score of 600 if native language is not English

6. A written document prepared by the applicant that includes a resume, a discussion of prior professional experience, future career goals, and reasons for pursuing the certificate program.

7. Letters of recommendation from at least three persons (a minimum of one academic) familiar with the applicant’s academic and professional background and experience in nursing practice.

Nursing Education Certificate Requirements: 15 Credit Hours

• NURS 5204 - Curriculum Design and Educational Theory (3 credits)
• NURS 5205 - Evaluation Methods of Nursing Education (3 credits)

  Clinical Focus Courses

  Choose one three-hour course from the following:

• NURS 5505 - Advanced Adult Health Nursing (3 credits)
• NURS 5525 - Advanced Critical Care Nursing (3 credits)
• NURS 5635 - Advanced Pediatric Nursing (3 credits)
• NURS 5515 - Advanced Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing (3 credits)
• NURS 5545 - Advanced Women’s Health and Perinatal Nursing (3 credits)
