The Humanities Minor seeks to provide a base for students to construct a better understanding of the spirit and meaning of civilization. It draws upon other departments within the university and attempts to show the interdependence of the various humanities disciplines. By the consideration of the vast storehouse of historical, philosophical, religious, and artistic expressions, students are better able to identify themes, ideas, and values that inform diverse areas of artistic and cultural production, ethical and political life, and individual senses of meaning. It is designed for the student desiring a broad background in the humanistic disciplines, and it should be of special interest to students planning to enter such professions as education, ministry, law, politics, health care fields, or academics.
Humanities Minor: 18 credits
The Humanities Minor requires 18 credits, nine (9) of which must be upper division (3000 level or above).
Note:
*The specific electives for this program must be approved by the Humanities advisor, including courses in the following disciplines:
- Art History
- History
- Literature (in any modern or classical language)
- Introduction to Music or Music History
- Philosophy
- Religious Studies
- Theatre, Dance, and Storytelling
No courses counting toward the student’s major field or Service-Learning or General Education Core courses (with the exception of HUMT 2310 and HUMT 2320 ) may be counted toward satisfying the Humanities Minor. Selected courses from social science fields such as anthropology, communications, sociology, or political science, and from other interdisciplinary programs such as Appalachian studies, general studies, and women’s studies may be included as electives with the permission of the minor advisor.
