The Scottish and Irish Traditional Music minor is a 21 credit program consisting of a 6 credit core, 6 credits of required electives, and 9 credits of guided electives chosen in consultation with the program advisor. The program is designed for those who wish to work toward a full-time or part-time career in music, for those with other career or academic ambitions in this field, and for those who seek to enrich their lives or academic studies through Scottish and Irish music and/or its connections to Appalachia. A student wishing to pursue a minor in Scottish and Irish Traditional Music needs to declare his or her intention at the earliest opportunity in order to facilitate planning.

Admission to the Minor

Any student seeking admission to the minor must be advised by a bluegrass, old-time, and country music program advisor, who will assist the student in planning a course of study. Minors must follow procedures for band classes, individual instruction, and progression standards, as outline

Scottish and Irish Traditional Music Minor: 21 credits

A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 18 credits of
which at least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.

Core Requirements: 6 credits

APST 2460 - Introduction to Scottish and Irish Studies (3 credits)
APST 4310 - Scottish and Irish Traditional Music (3 credits)

Required Electives: 6 credits

Choose 6 credits from the following:

APST 2320 - Beginning Gaelic Language and Culture (3 credits)
APST 4237 - Scots-Irish in Appalachia (3-6 credits)
APST 4327 - Ballads of Appalachia and the British Isles (3 credits)
APST 4567 - Scottish and Irish Folklife (3 credits)

Guided Electives: 9 credits
