Black American Studies is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to the examination and study of Black Americans in history, economics, literature, language, sociology, political science, education, entertainment, art, music, law, medicine, business, philosophy, humanities, and the social sciences.

The Black American Studies program promotes respect for knowledge, respect for others, affirmative of the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion, determination to improve our society through education and service, humility, compassion and empathy, and cooperation. Black American Studies also examines Africa and the history and roles of Black and Brown people across the globe.

A highly diverse and inclusive faculty from departments across the University offer courses in the program. The director and advisory board actively consult with faculty, staff, and students, to ensure that the Program’s activities and operations meet the needs of students, the University, and the community.

Black American Studies is highly attractive because of the interdisciplinary nature of the program and flexibility which allows students to compliment their major programs with a high quality, rigorous minor. Consequently, Black American Studies students and minors enhance their attractiveness to employers and enrich the quality of undergraduate education at East Tennessee State University.

Black American Studies Minor: 18 credits


At least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.
