The Culture and Health minor will offer an interdisciplinary curriculum that trains students in the cross-cultural diversity of experiences surrounding health, illness, and treatment. The minor will increase cultural competency of future health care providers, give them firsthand experience engaging health and disease in nontraditional settings, and provide them with tangible skills designed to help them have success in professional training. In addition to targeting pre-health and pre-med students, the minor will offer students in the social sciences a focused track to pursue careers in community health research, advocacy, and development work in the government and nonprofit sectors.

Minor Requirement

A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 18 credits of which at least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.

Culture and Health Minor: 18 credits

At least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.

• ANTH 2070 - Race, Science, and Human Variation (3 credits)

• ANTH 4250 - Medical Belief and Cultural Competence (3 credits)

Guided Electives: 9 credits

• ANTH 3080 - Nutritional Anthropology (3 credits)
• ANTH 3200 - Anthropology of the Body (3 credits)
• ANTH 3500 - Traditional and Indigenous Medicine (3 credits)
• ANTH 4410 - International Field Experience (2-6 credits)
• ANTH 4957 - Special Topic in Anthropology (1-6 credits) (when topic is relevant)
• HIST 3931 - History of Medicine (3 credits)
• HSCI 3046 - Human Genetics (3 credits)
• HSCI 3100 - Health Care Simulation I (3 Credits)
