The Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies minor is a 21 credit program consisting of a 12 credit core and 9 credits of guided electives chosen in consultation with the Bluegrass advisor. The program is designed for those who wish to work toward a full-time or part-time career in music and also for those with other career ambitions but who seek to enrich their lives or academic studies through music. A student wishing to pursue a minor in Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies needs to declare his or her intention at the earliest opportunity in order to facilitate planning.

Admission to the Minor

Any student seeking admission to the minor must be advised by a Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music program advisor, who will assist the student in planning a course of study. Minors must follow procedures for band classes, individual instruction, and progression standards, as outlined below.

Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies Minor: 21 credits


At least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.

Core Requirements: 12 credits


Traditional Didactic Courses: 3 credits


Choose 1 course from this list:

Instrumental/Vocal Skills: 3 credits


May repeat except BLUE 2310 or BLUE 3320

Band Classes: 3 credits


Choose 3 credits from the following: (may repeat)

Advisor Approved Elective: 9 credits


Choose 9 credits of any APST or BLUE classes EXCEPT bands or lessons and BLUE 3410, BLUE 3430, BLUE 3440, BLUE 3460, BLUE 3480, BLUE 3490, BLUE 3610, BLUE 3510, BLUE 3520, BLUE 3530, BLUE 3540.

 

Minor Requirement


A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 18 credits of which at least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.
