The Film and Media Studies Minor seeks to educate students about film in an interdisciplinary context. The goals of this program are to encourage serious consideration of film as an art form; to explore film as a medium of communication; and to examine the power of film in shaping attitudes, values, and our understanding of society and the world.

Courses are designed to provide students with knowledge of the techniques of the filmmaking process, the historical development of film as an institution, film theory, methods of critical analysis, and the relationship of film to broader issues within various disciplines.

Film and Media Studies Minor: 21 credits

The Film and Media Studies Minor requires 21 credits of coursework. Students may select 9 credits of elective courses to complete the minor course of study.

Required Courses: 12 credits

• FILM 3000 - Methods in Film Studies (3 credits)
• FILM 3100 - Rise of the Moving Image (3 credits)
• FILM 3200 - Post-War Global Film (3 credits)
• FILM 4000 - Film Theory (3 credits)

Advisor Approved Electives: 9 credits

Choose 9 credits from the following:

• FILM 2000 - Introduction to Film (3 credits)
• FILM 4100 - Film Genres (3 credits)
• FILM 4200 - Topics in Film (3 credits)
• FILM 4900 - Independent Study (1-3 credits)
• ENGL 4360 - Screenwriting (3 credits)
• ENGL 4507 - Literature in Film (3 credits)
• RTVF 2602 - Video-Film Techniques (3 credits)
• RTVF 4957 - Topics in Radio-TV-Film (3 credits) (only when topic is film related - requires pre-approval from Film and Media Studies coordinator)
• HIST 4957 - Topics in History (1-6 credits) (only when topic is film related - requires pre-approval from Film and Media Studies coordinator)
• SOCI 4252 - Race, Class, and Gender in Film (3 credits)
• SOCI 4957 - Special Topics in Sociology (1-6 credits) (only when topic is film related - requires pre-approval from Film and Media Studies coordinator)

Additional Information

Additional special topics courses may be counted in the minor with approval from Film and Media Studies coordinator.

Minor Requirement

A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 18 credits of which at least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.
