Leadership Studies Minor Program Information

The Interdisciplinary Minor in Leadership Studies is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experiences to fulfill future leadership roles in community-based, healthcare, education, business, government, and nonprofit organizations. Developed to complement any major at ETSU, the minor consists of 21 credits and six portfolio experiences, Once the student has officially declared the intent to participate in the minor, it is strongly encouraged to seek advisement from the minor’s program advisor. It is recommended that the student begin work on the portfolio as soon as possible. Assignment of a leadership mentor is ideally determined with the advisor by the end of the junior year.

Two courses are required of all students in the minor, LEAD 2110  and LEAD 4467 . These courses meet the required competencies in leadership and management. Fifteen credits are to be taken from the prescribed core competency areas below. Nine (9) credits of the total minor must be Upper Division Courses (3000-4000 level). Leadership Studies Minor: 21 credits

At least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.

Required Courses: 6 credits

• LEAD 2110 - Introduction to Leadership Effectiveness (3 credits)
• LEAD 4467 - Leadership Theory and Practice (3 credits)

Organizational Development: 3 credits

Choose from one (1) of the following:

• LEAD 3320 - Leading Nonprofit Organizations (3 credits)
• HDAL 4007 - Applications of Group Process (3 credits)
• MGMT 3000 - Organizational Behavior and Management (3 credits)
• PSYC 3340 - Introduction to I/O Psychology (3 credits)
• COMM 3380 - Communicating in Groups (3 credits)
• COMM 4350 - Organizational Communication (3 credits)

Ethics: 3 credits

Choose from one (1) of the following:

• PHIL 2020 - Introduction to Ethics (3 credits)
• MGMT 3320 - Management and Social Responsibility (3 credits)
• COMM 4366 - Communication Ethics (3 credits)

Presentation and Persuasion: 3 credits

Choose from one (1) of the following:

• COMM 2055 - Argumentation and Debate (3 credits)
• COMM 2045 - Public Speaking (3 credits)
• COMM 4346 - Business and Professional Communication (3 credits)
• COMM 3346 - Speaking for Social Change (3 credits)

Social Justice: 3 credits

Choose from one (1) of the following:

• SRVL 1020 - Introduction to Service-Learning in the Community (3 credits)
• SRVL 2000 - Advanced Service-Learning (3 credits)
• HIST 3900 - African-American History to 1877 (3 credits)
• HIST 3901 - African-American History Since 1877 (3 credits)
• WGSS 2010 - Introduction to Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (3 credits)

Diversity: 3 credits

Choose from one (1) of the following:

• ENGL 3400 - Survey of African American Literature (3 credits)
• HDAL 2340 - Understanding Cultural Diversity (3 credits)
• SOWK 1030 - Cultural Diversity (3 credits)
• COMM 4200 - Gender and Communication (3 credits)
• COMM 4356 - Intercultural Communication (3 credits)
• WGSS 2020 - Women in Global Perspective (3 credits)

Required Portfolio

• Complete a 20-hour service project that incorporates a leadership component (Submit reflection paper).
• Complete Strengths Finder Assessment and attend related seminar ($15 fee).
• Service as a campus or community leader for one year in an organization with some developed structure (Submit reflection paper).
• Complete a 5-year future leadership development plan suited to your needs and interests.
• Three reference letters which include comments on demonstrated leadership ability.
• Selection of a Leadership Mentor to include 3 separate visits/discussions with the mentor (Submit reflection paper).

It is strongly recommended that the portfolio be completed in consultation with the Leadership Studies advisor as early as possible in the student’s pursuit of the minor.

Minor Requirement

A minor is a secondary area of study outside of the major program of study with a structured curriculum composed of at least 18 credits of which at least 9 credits must be at the 3000-level or above.
