Director, Didactic Program in Dietetics
Nutrition professionals work in various settings where they apply scientific knowledge and skills to provide adequate nutritional care to patients and clients in clinical and community settings. These professionals assess client or community needs and implement evidence-based nutrition interventions to improve the health of individuals and populations. Students in the Nutrition and Wellness concentration are prepared to work in various community and food service positions, including Extension nutrition educators and agents, health coaches, public health nutritionists, sports nutritionists, school nutrition managers, and food service managers. This concentration does not meet the eligibility requirements for supervised practice and graduate programs to become a registered dietitian nutritionist. Students who later desire to become registered dietitian nutritionists can complete additional coursework included in the Dietetics concentration to receive their Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) Verification Statement to be eligible for graduate programs in Nutrition and Dietetics and supervised practice through Dietetic Internship (DI) programs.
Retention-Progression Policy: Nutrition students will be allowed to progress in the nutrition program as all nutrition courses are completed with a C or higher and all sciences courses are completed with a passing grade. Progression status will be evaluated at the close of each semester; students receiving less than a C in any of the classes listed above will be placed on probation. A student on probation who receives a second grade of less than C in one of the courses listed above will not be permitted to progress in the nutrition curriculum. Students earning failing grades in any nutrition or science course will be reviewed by faculty to determine feasibility of progression. Following the faculty review of student performance, an individual plan for curriculum completion will be presented for consideration for any student affected.
