The Department of Engineering Technology, Surveying, & Digital Media, a unit of the College of Business and Technology [CBAT], is one of the largest and most academically diverse units of East Tennessee State University. The Department offers undergraduate degree programs in numerous concentrations, undergraduate minors in two areas, and graduate degree programs in three concentrations. Several programs are accredited through ABET. Additionally, there are many majors and/or programs that are available through the Academic Common Market allowing out-of-state students to enroll at ETSU at in-state tuition rates.

The department’s adminstrative and faculty offices are housed primarily in two buildings on the ETSU main campus. The Engineering Technology and Surveying & Mapping programs are located in Wilson-Wallis Hall while the Digital Media program is housed across State of Franklin Road from the main campus in the Scott M. Niswonger Digital Media Center.

Surveying and Mapping Science Major Program Information

The Surveying and Mapping curriculum has a core curriculum and guided electives in three sequences: cadastral/design, geospatial, and surveying business.

This program is accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC) of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 – telephone: (410) 347-7700; www.abet.org.

It is designed to meet the following goals and objectives. Within two to four years, graduates of the program:

  1. will successfully complete FS (Fundamentals of Surveying) portion of the professional license exam;
  2. will have received progressive experience or increased professional opportunities;
  3. will obtain a position of management in a firm that conducts professional surveys;
  4. will become active and strive for a leadership role in the state and national organizations that represent the profession;

Students at graduation will have:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and applied sciences;
  2. an ability to design experiments and conduct experiments as well as analyze data and interpret data;
  3. an ability to formulate or design a system, process, or program to meet desired needs;
  4. an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams;
  5. an ability to identify and solve applied science problems;
  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
  7. an ability to communicate effectively;
  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of solutions in a global and societal context;
  9. a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning;
  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues;
  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, modern scientific and technical tools necessary for professional practice; and also be able to:
    1. function as effective individuals and obtain professional goals, outcomes, and opportunities;
    2. quickly adapt to the work environment.

Students in Surveying and Mapping Science pursue coursework leading to professional land surveying practice. Core courses include plane, geodetic, and boundary surveying. By taking a core of 64 semester hours in surveying related courses, students are well-prepared for future licensing and professional-level positions with surveying and engineering firms, government service, utility companies, and related industries.

General Program Information

To earn a degree from ETSU, there are specific course requirements put forth by ETSU, by the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), by each college, and by each department. All students must meet the degree requirements at each of these levels. Please follow the format below:

University-level Degree and Graduation Requirements

Total Credit Hours for Degree: 128

TBR General Education Requirements: 42 Credit Hours

Below you will see the categories and courses specified under TBR General Education Requirements. Note that certain courses are required for this degree, specific to this major. Thus, these courses will satisfy both a TBR General Education requirement AND a requirement of this major. (Other majors may require different General Education courses.) Where specific courses are required for this major, we only list those courses under the category. If there are no specific major requirements for a category, all course options appear.
 

Communication

9 credits, consisting of 6 credits of written composition and 3 credits of oral communication.

  • When one of the oral communication courses listed above is completed to meet the general education core requirement, that course will not count toward ETSU’s oral communication-intensive requirement. (See “Other Graduation Requirementss”) Any additional course from this list that is completed will count toward the oral communication-intensive requirement.

9 credits, consisting of 3 credits of literature, 3 credits of fine arts, and 3 credits of humanities electives.

Students eligible to enroll in this math course must do so during their first calendar year of enrollment or prior to accumulating 33 semester credits at ETSU.

Surveying and Mapping Science Major

2 A minimum of one hour for Co-op should be taken; more hours are allowed; SURV 3540  can also be substituted.

Surveying Sequence Requirements: 22 Credit Hours (Effective Fall 2012 only)

Students should select a group of courses from one of the following sequences:

Sequence #1: Cadastral/Design Sequence

Total: 22 Credit Hours

3 GEOL 4617 , GEOG 4317 , ENTC 4417  or ENTC 4227  can be substituted.

4 SURV 3570  can be substituted.

Sequence #2: Geospatial Sequence

Additional Information

Transfer Students - Transfer students must meet all ETSU requirements for the minimum number of hours from ETSU and from a senior institution. Articulation agreements with several two-year institutions are available for smooth transfer to ETSU.
