Physics

  • PHYS 2018 - Honors Great Ideas in Science I

    (3 credit hours)
Prerequisites: ENGL 1228  A seminar course for sophomores in the University Honors Scholars program. Each year, a specific topic relating the interplay between science and society is selected by the instructor and modules are set up relating various scientific disciplines to this topic. Emphasis is made in the interrelationships among the sciences and between science and culture. In this first semester of the two-semester sequence of courses, the scientific method and the physical sciences are explored.

  • PHYS 2020 - General Physics II-Noncalculus

    (3 credits)
Prerequisites: PHYS 2010 . A survey of the topics in classical physics intended primarily for students in pre-professional curricula and majors in various engineering technology concentrations. (Engineering transfer students should take PHYS 2120 .) Topics include electricity and magnetism, wave mechanics, and geometric optics. A good working knowledge of algebra and trigonometry (at least at the high school level) is required before taking this course. Heavy emphasis is made for solutions to numerical problems. PHYS 2020 is the second semester of a two-semester sequence in general physics. (Many curricula require a laboratory course in physics. Students in these curricula must also take PHYS 2021 .) Three hours of lecture each week.

  • PHYS 2110 - Technical Physics I-Calculus Based

    (5 credits)
A survey of physics for students majoring in technical fields, such as physics, chemistry, engineering, etc. Students in pre-professional studies (pre-med, pre-dentistry, etc.) who desire a stronger preparation for professional school also can take this course. Topics include classical mechanics and thermodynamics. One semester of calculus is required before taking this course. Heavy emphasis is made for the solutions to numerical problems. PHYS 2110 is the first semester of a two-semester sequence in calculus-based classical physics. Three hours lecture and three hours of laboratory/recitation each week.

  • PREH 1350 - Health Professions Exploration Seminar

    (3 credits)
Provides students interested in a career in one of the health professions with information about possible health care career choices, the training required, and the components of the admissions process used by the various professional schools. Topics may include critical thinking and ethics in health care, modern trends in the health professions, academic development, the importance of practical experience, GPA/Transcript evaluations, the application process and personal essays, the professional school interview, and a review of “alternative careers”. The course requires completion of 4 hours of practical experience/shadowing in the field of interest, as well as 4 hours of community service. The credit hours changed from 2 to 3 beginning spring 2016.

  • PSYC 3444 - Computer Methods in Psychology

    (3 credits)
Prerequisites: CSCI 1100  and PSYC 3100  (or a comparable course, with the approval of the instructor). This course introduces students to microcomputer operating system and a statistics software package, such as SPSS or SAS. It provides them with the skills necessary to select and perform basic statistical calculations and enables them to interpret the statistical outputs generated. In addition, students will demonstrate the ability to communicate by way of e-mail and access and download materials from sites on the Internet.
