The mission of the Department of Health Sciences is to offer a quality educational experience which provides a fundamental knowledge of the basic sciences; to develop student communication skills; fosters enthusiasm for continued learning; to encourage a strong program of scholarly activities; and to promote a spirit of cooperation among members of the academic community and with the community-at-large.

The Department of Health Sciences, located in Lamb Hall, is a multidisciplinary department offering a variety of courses concerning those sciences relevant to or implicating the human body and human health, e.g.: Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiological Sciences. The department offers a B.S. degree in Health Sciences with concentrations in Microbiology or in Human Health. In addition, the department offers minors in Health Sciences. The department also has a joint graduate program with the Department of Biological Sciences and offers a M.S. degree in Biological sciences with a concentration in Microbiology.

The purpose of the Human Health Concentration is to provide a “human-centric” program with exposure to current concepts, laboratory techniques, and disease prevention/health care recommendations and protocols. The concentration emphasizes anatomy, physiology, disease, and human health. The graduates with a Microbiology concentration are qualified to be employed as technicians in academic or industrial research laboratories or pursue advanced degrees in graduate or professional schools.

General Admission Requirements for Human Health Concentration

The following admission standards apply to all entering ETSU students, to ETSU students seeking to change to a Human Health major, to students transferring from other institutions, and to students readmitted to ETSU.

1. The student must have completed and earned a grade of “C” or higher in each of the following courses:

2. Students will be given two chances to earn a grade of “C” or higher in the above courses. After two unsuccessful attempts the student will be ineligible for admission to the program.

3. The student must also have a minimum GPA of 2.75 in all courses. Once admitted to the program the student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 in all science courses or they will be dismissed from the program. It is strongly recommended that students consult the “Human Health Suggested Course Sequence” document.

Each student planning to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences with a Human Health Concentration must apply for admission to the program. They are eligible to apply upon completion of the following admission requirements.

General Program Information

To earn a degree from ETSU, there are specific course requirements established by ETSU, by the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), by each college, and by each department. All students must meet the degree requirements at each of these levels outlined in the following list:

Communication

9 credits, consisting of 6 credits of written composition and 3 credits of oral communication.

Written Composition

Complete both of the following: 

• ENGL 1010 - Critical Reading and Expository Writing (3 credits)
• ENGL 1020 - Critical Thinking and Argumentation (3 credits)

• Students required to complete learning support in writing must enroll in a learning support-designated section (L01-L99) of ENGL 1010  during their first 15 hours at ETSU (not including summer) unless they are also required to complete learning support in reading. Students needing learning support in both reading and writing should enroll in ENGL 1010-Lxx immediately upon completing learning support in reading.   Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 1010  and ENGL 1020 .
