General Program Information

The professional undergraduate degree in the visual arts is the bachelor of fine arts degree. This degree allows the student to specialize in a particular area of art in order to prepare for a professional career. Grades in Art applied to the major must be C or above.

All studio art students must enter the Department of Art and Design on the BA track; after 21 credit hours in studio art and before 45 hours in art have been completed, the student must successfully complete

- BFA Portfolio Review
prior to being accepted into the BFA program. The student must pass this review in order to enroll in the BFA capstone course, ARTA 4916
Portfolio and Exhibit
and to graduate with a BFA degree in art.

Students in the BFA program should be aware that the final advanced study courses taken in the area of specialization should have as the primary goal the production of art work of exhibition quality and that examples of this work will be exhibited by the Department of Art and Design as proof of the student’s excellence in a required senior exhibit.

ETSU Academic Proficiency Requirements

Writing: Students must complete a minimum of four writing-intensive courses. At least two of these courses must be in the major field of study. At least two of the four courses must be at the 3000-4000 level.

Oral Communication: Students must complete a minimum of two oral communication-intensive courses. At least one of these courses must be in the major field of study.

Using Information Technology: Students must pass the information technology proficiency exam or successfully complete CSCI 1100 - Using Information Technology during their first calendar year or prior to accumulating 33 semester credits at ETSU. In addition, students must complete at least one using information technology-intensive course in the major field of study.

Transfer students may be subject to reduced number of intensives.

ARTA 2916 - BFA Portfolio Review (0 credit) (to be taken after completing 36 and before completing 45 ARTA credits)
ARTA 4916 - Portfolio and Exhibit (1-3 credits variable)

Art History:

Three 4000-level courses, including:

ARTH 4067 - Modern Art (3 credits) or
ARTH 4077 - Contemporary Art (3 credits)
