This certificate aligns closely with the Masters in Education concentrations in Secondary Teaching, Occupational Education, and Elementary Education. A student who wishes to pursue an ETSU master’s degree in education concurrently with the certificate must also apply and be admitted to the degree program. A student who completes the Certificate in STEM K-12 Education and later wishes to pursue a concentration Secondary Education or Occupational Education may apply up to 15 credits upon approval from the graduate coordinator and Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. A student who completes the Certificate in STEM K-12 Education and later wishes to pursue a concentration in Elementary Education may apply up to 6 credits upon approval from the graduate coordinator. All credits must meet GPA requirements and must be within the six-year matriculation limit.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the requirements of the School of Graduate Studies:

• A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Submission of a 2-page essay outlining past experience with STEM education and goals beyond achieving the certificate in STEM PreK-12 Education.

STEM K-12 Education, Graduate Certificate Requirements: 15 credits

Required Courses: 12 credits

• SCED 5600 - STEM Theory and Pedagogy (3 credits)
• SCED 5610 - Creativity and Inquiry in STEM Education (3 credits)
• SCED 5620 - Bridging STEM in Education and Business (3 credits)
• SCED 5630 - Integrated STEM Curriculum Development (3 credits)

Advisor Approved Electives: 3 credits

Choose one of the following:

• BIOL 5910 - Research in Biology (1-4 credits)
• CUAI 5707 - Classroom Management and Discipline in Regular Classrooms (3 credits)
• CUAI 5910 - Assessment Techniques in the Classroom (3 credits)
• CUAI 5957 - Topics in Curriculum and Instruction (1-6 credits) *
• MATH 5010 - Problem Solving (3 credits)
• MATH 5025 - Foundations and Structure of Mathematics I (3 credits)
• READ 5437 - Reading Instruction in Middle and Secondary Schools (3 credits)
• READ 5441 - Reading in the K-6 Classroom (3 credits)
• SCED 5957 - Topics in Science Education (1-6 credits)
• Other electives will be accepted in consultation with the graduate coordinator

*The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers many Special Topics courses related to STEM education during the summer.
